CEO Dan Stewart: Your Positive Impact in Real Estate

My long time friend Dan Stewart is the CEO of HappyGrasshopper. If you’ve not seen that company name before, yeah, the name is a bit goofy but it stands out – just like Dan. He wrote an email to his clients that was about a walk (he called it a hike) we took last month. I thought it was a good message for you and I wanted to share it. Perhaps you are like me and you need a reminder that sometimes you can make a positive impact in real estate on people by simply doing what you do.

Oh, and FWIW HappyGrasshopper is a company built to make a positive impact in real estate, to nurture clients via email, and start conversations. (& for years HG has leveraged Revaluate Data, so that’s cool also
)

Dan Stewart’s Letter: “You’re Powerful AF”

I’m just back from a quick trip to Denver and a friend of mine helped me realize something worth sharing, and that’s why I’m writing you now…And it’s important to call it out because it’s the kind of thing that could easily go unnoticed.

So here’s what happened…

I was invited to speak at an event hosted by ClubWealth, and as is my practice, I look up who I know that’s nearby and plan to spend a little time together. For this trip, that meant seeing my good buddy Chris Drayer, who you may know via Revaluate.

Chris took me on a hike up into the irrepressibly beautiful Eldorado Canyon State Park. It’s the kind of place where nature smacks you in the head and you walk around with your jaw open. Literally every view is spectacular.

During our hike, we came across a woman and her standard poodle (who could be the twin of our family dog.)

Without hesitation, I started a conversation and asked if I could take a picture of her because she looks so much like the one we had at home. It’s the kind of interaction any of us could easily have and just as easily forget.

But Chris didn’t see it that way.

Afterwards, as we continued our hike, he shook his head and asked, “How do you do that?”

I said, “Do what?” not expecting or even realizing my simple exchange with the poodle lady was remotely special.

He said, “Are you kidding? You made her day, and that’s something I’ve seen you do over the years. You just effortlessly see people and help them feel special.”

And, of course, this sounded ridiculous to me. I was just being me. It wasn’t calculated, there was zero artifice… and it certainly didn’t feel special, until Chris assured me that it was.

Now that I’ve spent a little time thinking about it, I’ve realized a few things:

The Realization

1) Most of us are blind to what we’re good at. Whether it’s through long practice or natural talent, deploying our skills no longer feels challenging. In fact, it’s easy to take them for granted.

2) Successful people successfully influence others– and that’s a muscle that needs to be exercised. And, for total clarity, ‘influence’ is not manipulation. It can be as simple as changing the way someone is feeling.

3) Many of us need to be encouraged to do what’s good for us.

So today, I’m writing to encourage you to make a positive impact on someone. A few kind words are all you need, and you never know what it could spiral into. For example, I helped poodle lady feel special, Chris helped me feel special, and now you’re more closely in touch with your ability to impact the world.

And if you can do that, what else can you do?

All my best,

Dan
