Appraisal Bias in Housing: How To Reduce Risk

I’ve given NAR a hard time recently for lacking much action when it comes to discriminatory housing practices. This is intentional and I do so because I believe that we need to shine a spotlight in places that need our attention. But while most of that comes across as negative, I want to take a moment and share some good news around appraisal bias in housing.

NAR is hosting a free webinar to help reduce Appraisal Bias in housing featuring Jillian White, CEO & Founder of Appraisal Insights. The webinar is scheduled for July 18, 2023 01:00 PM (ET) that promises to teach mortgage lenders how to hold their Appraisal Management Companies (AMCs) accountable for unbiased appraisals. “The webinar aims to provide guidance to lenders on minimizing the risk of repetitional damage and potential lawsuits related to appraisal practices. Jillian will discuss strategies and best practices that lenders can adopt to ensure that appraisals provided by third parties are unbiased and meet regulatory standards. Gain insights into effective risk mitigation strategies, such as establishing robust appraisal review procedures, implementing independent quality control measures, and fostering open communication channels with AMCs.”

About the presenter: Jillian White
Jillian received a BA in Neuroscience and Behavior from Columbia University and has led a successful career as an executive and entrepreneur in the real estate appraisal industry. As an SRA designated appraiser, Jillian currently serves on The Appraisal Institutes Government Relations Committee, as Trustee of The Appraisal Foundations Board of Trustees and is a former member of the New York State Appraisal Board. She began her career as founder and CEO of White Picket Fence Appraisals, a residential real estate appraisal company based New York. Motivated by her experience as one of the industry’s few black female appraisers, and having to appraise her own family’s home in order to facilitate the sale, Jillian has made it her personal mission to educate and empower all homeowners.
